LWV Piedmont Delegates attend the LWV California State Convention
LWV Piedmont delegates at the LWV California 2023 Convention
Members from LWVP attended the LWV California Convention in San Francisco. The biennial convention drew over 200 delegates, staff, and League members from Leagues across the state.
 
In attendance as delegates from Piedmont were Jennifer Trainor, Lois Corrin, Lorrel Plimier, and Kathleen Quenneville (left). A highlight of this year’s Convention was the Drag for Democracy fundraiser on Saturday evening that not only entertained with local drag celebrities, but also gave awards to several local politicians and activists who work for LGBTQ+ people, rights, and equality.
 
Seb Ford Wins LWVP 2023 Civics in Action Award

LWVP Awards a $500 scholarship to a  high school senior who exhibits a strong commitment to civic engagement as selected by the PHS Civics teachers. This year's winner was Piedmont High School senior, Sohrab "Seb" Ford. 

 

Seb has taken on a passionate role of advocating and working for the people around him, including free speech controversies in student clubs, discussing in open-forums for Piedmont community families about transgender rights and visibility, and counseling and wisdom within the Piedmont Affinity Mentorship Program.

Apply for the Alameda County Elections Oversight Commission
 
Alameda County is establishing an Elections Oversight Commission and is looking for volunteers to serve on the Commission. From Supervisor Keith Carson, "Trust in our electoral process is at the heart of our democracy; by establishing this commission, we are ensuring that this process will be more transparent and that issues impacting voting access and vote tabulation will be addressed and corrected in a timely manner.” See Supervisor Carson's press release here.
 
The Alameda County Council of the League of Women Voters has appointed a representative to serve on the Commission. Additional members are needed from the county. Learn more about the Commission and apply here.

Tell Your Congressmember to Support the ERA!

At the end of April, the Senate voted on a resolution to affirm the validity of the ERA. The resolution fell short of the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. Senator Schumer filed a motion to reconsider, which will allow him to bring it up again later in this Congress. We need your help in continuing to tell our elected officials that equality should be a part of the Constitution. Inequality hurts everyone. Urge Congress to act now to assert that the ERA is part of the Constitution!
