Remembering Dale Rogers Marshall, Longtime LWVP Member and Friend

Mary Ann Benson shares a personal memory about our long-time member, Dale Rogers Marshall, who recently passed away.

I first met Dale over 50 years ago at a League of Women Voters of Piedmont meeting in the Ellen Driscoll Playhouse.  She was new in town but we had daughters the same age and soon became friends.  Dale was a graduate of Cornell, UC Berkeley and UCLA majoring in Political Science and she was teaching at UC Berkeley and Davis.  She served as Dean at Wellesley College from 1986-1992 and President of Wheaton College from 1992 to 2004.

She returned to Piedmont ready for retirement but she was still involved in interesting projects.  Dale served on the Berkeley Rep. Board of Directors and chaired the Alameda County Grand Jury.  She and husband Don received a Fulbright and spent six months teaching in Kalmykia, Russia.  In 2009 Dale worked with the Oakland League to host visitors from Russia.  Dale was involved with Oakland students seeking success in challenging colleges which reflects her lifelong concern for those who were black and brown. Dale was an incredible reader taking lots of notes and adding much to Book Club discussions.

Dale is survived by her husband of 60 years, Donald, and her children Jessica Belhumeur, Cynthia Marshall and Clayton Marshall, and six grandchildren. She was a remarkable woman and will be missed.
