Health Impacts from Heat: What to Know and What You Can Do

Health Impacts from Heat what to know and what you can do 2023 Climate Speaker Series with Dr. Basu
Health Impacts from Heat: What to Know and What You Can Do

Please join the League of Women Voters of Piedmont on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 4-5pm for an illuminating and compelling talk by Dr. Rupa Basu, speaking on the known and quantified negative healthcare impacts of climate pollution and also the known, achievable, current-day solutions for reducing and avoiding heat-related health risks.

When: Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 at 4-5pm PST (5-6pm MT | 6-7pm CT | 7-8pm ET)
Where: Online via Zoom. Register for free to receive an email with the Zoom link.

Dr. Basu identifies heat increases and their resulting health impacts as a global problem. Heat deaths are reported worldwide and are currently significantly underreported. She will present the scientific consensus on the health impacts of rising temperatures, such as the known cardiovascular impacts and adverse birth and mental health outcomes, providing examples from California epidemiologic studies. Her own research quantifies heat-related health disparities, primarily by race and ethnicity, and identifies reasons for these disparities. Dr. Basu will discuss risk perceptions as an element of vulnerability, and offer heat guidelines developed for prevention. Most importantly, Dr. Basu will give wise and science-based advice on preventing heat-associated risks for our lives and quality-of-life.

This event is part of our 2022-23 Climate Speaker Series brought to you by the League of Women Voters of Piedmont and Piedmont Connect. The series will serve to educate constituents on a range of important topics to improve our understanding of the causes (sometimes surprising), perils (sometimes not fully recognized), and solutions to ongoing environmental pollution and climate disruptions.
This program will be recorded. You can watch it live or at a later date on our YouTube channel. The second half of the program will be a moderated Q&A session with questions from Zoom participants and YouTube livestream viewers. You will not see the event posted ahead of time on YouTube. It will appear once the program starts at 4pm Pacific Time on February 8th.
